Flokkr about Klœingr Brúsason — ÞSjár KlœingrI

Þórðr Særeksson (Sjáreksson)

Kari Ellen Gade 2012, ‘(Introduction to) Þórðr Særeksson (Sjáreksson), Flokkr about Klœingr Brúsason’ in Diana Whaley (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 1: From Mythical Times to c. 1035. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 1. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 241.

This helmingr (ÞSjár Klœingr) concerns an attack on Trondheim c. 1014 and is preserved in Óláfs saga helga in both the Separate version (ÓH) and Hkr version (ÓHHkr), in Fsk, and in SnE. It is anonymous in Hkr, ÓH and SnE, but it is attributed to Þórðr in Fsk. Hkr and ÓH mention that it was part of a flokkr about Klœingr. Klœingr Brúsason (Brunason in J1ˣ, J2ˣ, Holm2; Bjarnason in 325VI, 321ˣ, 78aˣ) is unknown, but he appears from this fragment and its context in the kings’ sagas to have been in the company of Sveinn jarl Hákonarson c. 1014. Some mss (J1ˣ, J2ˣ, 972ˣ, 325VI, 321ˣ, 78aˣ, Flat) mistakenly attribute the helmingr to Klœingr. The mss used in this edn are listed below; is the main ms. Among the SnE mss, B is now damaged and difficult to read, and it is therefore supplemented where necessary by 744ˣ, an early eighteenth-century copy made of B when that ms. was more legible.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
