Judith Jesch 2017, ‘ Rǫgnvaldr jarl Kali Kolsson, Lausavísur’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 342. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=10972> (accessed 24 April 2024)
These two quatrains and one stanza (Rv Lv 33-5) are attributed to ‘Rǫgnvaldr’ and, in the absence of other poets by that name, are thought to have been composed by Rǫgnvaldr Kali Kolsson, jarl of Orkney, the bulk of whose poetry is edited in SkP II (Rv Lv 1-32II; see also RvHbreiðm Hl in the present volume). A few parallels of expression and poetic stance may support this attribution (see Notes to Rv Lv 33 and 35, below).
Lv 33 is preserved in the fourteenth-century Codex Wormianus (W), an expanded version of SnE which was the main source for the seventeenth-century Laufás Edda (LaufE), in which all three stanzas are preserved, though not in all mss. Lv 33 and 35 are preserved in mss of both the X and Y branches of LaufE, but Lv 34 only in Y-branch mss. The X branch is considered to have a better text, though not always for the poetry. The main text for Lv 33 is thus W, for Lv 34 it is 2368ˣ and for Lv 35 it is papp10ˣ. All stanzas are also in RE 1665(Hh3, Ii3), but they were copied from a ms. of the LaufE Y branch and have no independent value.
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
