context
This episode occurs at the beginning of Eyrbyggja saga, when Iceland is first being settled. Þórólfr has already been introduced as a great worshipper of the god Þórr, and it is under his guidance that Þórólfr sails to Iceland. The saga is thought to have been written in the mid-13th century, and focuses on a number of disputes between chieftains and families in the Snæfellsnes area. Whilst Snorr góði emerges as the main character amongst these disputes, the saga contains several episodes involving hauntings, the supernatural, and literary descriptions of pre-Christian belief and practice.
