Þórir's father Grímr takes his wife and son to Iceland. They stayed the winter at Grímsey. Here Grímr catches a merman while fishing one day. He asks the merman about his own future and where they should settle in Iceland, and is told that it is his son Þórir the merman has knowledge about. Þórir is later to choose where to settle by an omen from Grímrs mare Skalm. When Þórir dies, he goes into the mountain called Þórir's Cliff.

context
The narrative of Landnámabók is set in the late 9th/early 10th century where people from mainly Norse cultures leave their homelands and sail to Iceland in the north west to settle. Landnámabók survives in 5 medieval manuscripts all dating to late 13th century and later. Sturlubók by Sturla Þórðarson, Hauksbók by Haukr Erlendsson (based on Sturlubók and a lost version by Styrmir Kárason), Melabók, Skarðsárbók and Þórðarbók.
