In order to learn about the past, present and furture of the world, Óðinn resurrects a dead vǫlva in order to question her knowledge on these topics.

It is unknown why Óðinn knew that this particular vǫlva would be able to answer his questions or even how he knew where to find her. The conflict is evidenced throughout the poem in the instances where the vǫlva questions Óðinn on his knowledge, some of it supposedly known only to him.
