Biography

Kari Ellen Gade 2009, ‘(Biography of) Snækollr Gunnason’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 654-5.

Snækollr (Snæk) was one of Skúli Bárðarson’s district chieftains who were captured by the Birkibeinar in 1239. He is likely to be identical with Snækollr Gunnason from Orkney, who is mentioned earlier in Hák (see LH 1894-1901, II, 29). If so, his mother was Ragnhildr, the daughter of Eiríkr stagbrellr ‘Stay-teaser’ (?) and Ingigerðr (or Ingiríðr), the daughter of Jarl Rǫgnvaldr Kali Kolsson (Rv). Snækollr left Orkney after having participated in the killing of Jarl Jón Haraldsson (see E 1916, 558-60; Flat 1860-8, III, 103-5). He is not listed in Skáldatal, and the lv. below is the only poetry attributed to him.
