ONP: Dictionary of Old Norse Prose

Word

aftann, eftann sb. m. [aftans, dat. aftni; aftnar] (n., HeiðrUˣ 130⁴, ikke belagt middelalderligt, cf. Ejder 1969 115)

Status: excerpted citation slips citation text supplemented structured definitions in Danish definitions in English

1) aften (alm. og oftest brugt synon. med kveld sb. n.), sen eftermiddag og aften (spec. om tidsrum ml. ‘nón’ og ‘náttmál’, cf. miðr aftann infra, tilsynel. med reference dels til kirkelig inddeling af døgnet i ‘horae canonicae’, dels til tidl. nordisk inddeling i ‘ǽttir’) evening (the more frequent and general use, as a synonym for kveld sb. n.), late afternoon and evening (used of the period between ‘nón’ and ‘náttmál’, cf. miðr aftann infra, a more specific use apparently based both on the ecclesiastical division of the day into ‘horae canonicae’ and on the earlier Nordic division into ‘ǽttir’)

 ● aftann dags

 ● miðr aftann “midaften”, tidspunkt mellem ‘nón’ og ‘náttmál’ (da solen står i vest) “mid-evening”, point in time halfway between ‘nón’ and ‘náttmál’ (when the sun is in the west)

 ● miðs aftans tíð vesper, aftensang vespers, evensong

2) aften før en kirkelig fest- el. højtidsdag, vigilie eve of a church festival, vigil
