[7] vellskata ‘the generous chieftain’: The first element of this cpd, vell-, means ‘gold’, while the second, -skati, is a poetic word for ‘man, chieftain’, preserved in ModNorw. skate ‘tree-trunk without branches’ and ModSwed. skate ‘tree-top’ or ‘tail’ (see AEW: skata).
