Because the only pitched battle that Viðkunnr is known to have participated in was Magnús berfœttr’s last battle against the Irish in Ulster (1103), þjóðir (gen. pl. þjóða) is taken here to mean ‘nations’ (see Fritzner: þjóð 3).
