Rydberg, followed by Skj B and Skald, retains the sense but substitutes gotna gen. pl. ‘of men’. Jón Sigurðsson (marginal n. to 444ˣ) suggests emendation to góð f. nom. sg. ‘good’, qualifying ván ‘hope’.
