He presents it as part of a warrior-kenning, snyrtir sigða gunntjalds ‘polisher of the sickles of the awning of battle’ [SHIELD > SWORDS > WARRIOR] but the emendation is not necessary to make sense of the word in this context, although the rhyme provided makes his suggestion plausible.
