[1] kárn (m. or n.): This bird has not been identified. As an independent word, this heiti does not occur elsewhere, but it is found in compounds; cf. the bird-heiti jaðrakárn ‘whimbrel’ (st. 5/8 below) and the Icelandic river-name Kárnsá (Kornsá), as well as Faroese krákukárn, which is a bird-heiti in a poem about birds, and New Norw. korn, kråkekonn ‘crow’ (see ÍO: kárn).
