Note to SnSt Ht 33III

[2] reið ‘swung’: So , W. The reading in R, réð (3rd pers. sg. pret. indic. of ráða ‘rule, govern, decide, plan, cause’) is difficult to make sense of in the context and it has been altered to riðu 3rd pers. pl. pret. indic. ‘swung’ (R*). Réð is retained by Faulkes as a part of an absolute construction ‘the sword was the cause’ (SnE 2007: ráða, 138-9), but in view of the readings of the other mss, réð looks like a scribal error.
