4.1. Sources for skaldic poetry in the present edition: manuscripts, facsimiles and editions

This subsection presents the mss which are the basis for the editions in SkP III, along with lists of relevant facsimiles and editions (for full details, see Bibliography), a brief account of the source, and a note on the skaldic poetry contained in the prose source. Because the bulk of the poetry edited in SkP III is preserved in a limited number of prose sources and many stanzas are found in more than one source (e.g. in SnE, LaufE and RE 1665), it was not possible to present a full account of the poetry transmitted in each source; rather, lists of poetry unique to each prose source are given. The stanzas and poems found in the treatises on poetics and grammar published in other volumes of SkP are given as a list at the end of Section 2 above. Unlike in SkP I-II, the prose sources are not presented in alphabetical order but according to genre beginning with Snorra Edda (4.1.1), followed by Laufás Edda (4.1.2) and Resen’s Edda Islandorum (4.1.3), and concluding with the grammatical treatises (TGT, FoGT, GrammSkáld; 4.1.4) and a subsection containing poems and stanzas that are transmitted in other sources (4.1.5). The sigla for the prose sources correspond to those of Ordbog over det norrøne prosasprog (ONP; see also ‘General Abbreviations’ above and Bibliography at the end of the volume). The mss for each of the prose sources are listed with brief descriptions. The full, standard ms. sigla in the SkP editions follow those of the Registre to ONP wherever possible; the sigla for the ms. collections and the mss used in SkP III are listed under ‘General Abbreviations’ above. The abbreviated sigla given below and used in the ms. sections in the individual editions were developed by Tarrin Wills for the SkP project. In keeping with the practice established by the Registre to ONP, a superscript ˣ is added to the sigla of all paper mss. The approximate date of the mss also follows those of the Registre; for mss not cited in ONP, the standard editions have been consulted (see also Kålund 1888-94). Facsimiles and editions are listed for each prose source (for full details, see Bibliography). Compared to the wealth of stemmata given in the corresponding sections of SkP I-II, the present overview of mss contains only one stemma (for the X branch of LaufE). The reason is that it is often very difficult to establish a stemma for the mss of a source (e.g. for the mss of SnE and TGT) or that the stemmata are extremely complex (e.g. LaufE and RE 1665; see LaufE 1979, 92), and sometimes different sections of a prose work, e.g. Gylf/Skm and the þulur, have different stemmata. In addition, some stanzas are preserved in sources with a great many mss that are discussed in detail, with stemmata, in other volumes of SkP; rather than reproducing that information here, references are given to the relevant sections of the Introductions to SkP I-II and V for each stanza (Section 4.1.5).
