Vol. III. Poetry from Treatises on Poetics 7. Introduction 4. Sources

4. Sources

Kari Ellen Gade 2017, ‘Sources’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols [check printed volume for citation].

The present section, which discusses the sources of the poetry edited in SkP III, falls into two parts, the first of which (4.1) gives an overview of the mss, facsimiles and editions in which the stanzas and poems appear. The second part (4.2) contains a fuller discussion of the main prose works in which the bulk of the poetry is transmitted, i.e. Snorra Edda (Prologue, Gylfaginning, Skáldskaparmál: 4.2.1; Háttatal: 4.2.2), the þulur (4.2.3) and the Third and Fourth Grammatical Treatises (4.2.4, 4.2.5). Because this part does not contain separate subsections on Laufás Edda and Resen’s Edda Islandorum, these works are discussed in some detail in Sections 4.1.2 and 4.1.3 below.
