2. How to link a named thing (being, person, place, ethnic group) to a text
This is not currently part of the peer-reviewed material of the project. Do not cite as a research publication.
Use these instructions to make semantic links between the named thing table (SQL: ‘thing’) and the text segment table (SQL: ‘verses’).
A. Where the named thing corresponds unambiguously to a word in the text:
- Ensure that the named thing is in the index/entities table
- Locate the stanza/chapter/segment with the word
- If not already created, create entries in the word table for the text (‘enter and edit text’ > ‘text’ [update], then ‘prose order/continue’ [update] — you don’t normally need to change anything)
- Link the word to the thing using the ‘text, prose, translation’ form — the last column here links to the index/entries table
B. Where the named thing corresponds lexically and potentially ambiguously to a word in the text:
- Follow steps 1-3 in A
- Ensure that the name for the named thing is in the ‘names’ form in the index/entities entry for the named thing, and that this is linked to the appropriate dictionary lemma (e.g. Ægir also has name ‘Hlér’ and this is linked to ‘Hlér’ in the dictionary)
- Use the ‘enter and edit text’ > ‘lemmata’ form for the stanza/text segment to link the word to the dictionary lemma
C. The simple but sloppy way
- Ensure that the named thing is in the index/entities table
- Locate the stanza/chapter/segment which refers to the thing
- Use the ‘references’ field in the ‘quick’ form under the entry in the index/entities table to add a reference to the stanza/chapter/segment
