En Sæmundr, sonr Sigfúss, vissi jafnan snilli sína, {faðir Lopts}, sás þótti firum hǫfuðsmaðr við alla hluti.
‘But Sæmundr, Sigfúss’s son, always showed his prowess, Loptr’s father [= Sæmundr], who seemed to people a leader in all respects.’
notes and context
Sæmundr Sigfússon (1054/6-1133) was one of the most learned men in Iceland in his day. He studied in France (or the Rhineland; see Foote 1975, 67-70) and returned to Iceland in 1076. He was a priest and presumably the founder of the school at Oddi. See Halldór Hermannsson 1932b.
