Segi ek svá kveðit snotru vífi,
at ek Brynhildar biðja mundak,
ef vita þættumz, at vildi hon
Hróki unna, Hámundar bur.
Ek segi svá kveðit snotru vífi, at ek mundak biðja Brynhildar, ef þættumz vita, at hon vildi unna Hróki, bur Hámundar.
‘Thus I make known to the wise woman that I would ask for the hand of Brynhildr, if I thought that she could love Hrókr, son of Hámundr. ’
notes and context
It would appear from this and the following stanzas that Hrókr is very well aware that he is being overheard (as the prose text represents it) and that he knows who his audience is.
