3. Prose order

A prose order, in which the words of the text are re-arranged as if prose, should be given for each stanza, however straightforward, # immediately after the Text and Categorisation in Skj.

a.      There should be as close a correspondence as practicable between the prose order and:

i.       the order of the English translation;

ii.      Icelandic idiom.

# With possessive pronouns + noun, the order should normally be: noun plus possessive, not possessive plus noun. The same also applies for other attributive genitives, e.g. sonr Haralds (not Haralds sonr).

b.      Since intercalary clauses will be disentangled, it should not normally be necessary to use dashes and parentheses. A minor exception is where an intercalary interrupts syntactic continuity between the two helmingar of a stanza.

c.       Punctuation should otherwise follow the conventions for the Text (see § B-2-e above).

‡ d.   Any emendations made in the Text should be indicated, using italics. (Emendations are not indicated in the Translation.)

‡ e.    Kennings must be marked in the Prose order with curly brackets (braces), including enclosing kennings. For full details, see >> 6. 3-II Analysing and formatting kennings.

# f.    Enclitics in Text, e.g. vilk, munk: it is not necessary to write these as [e]k vil, [e]k mun in the Prose order. The brackets are only necessary when the cliticized parts need to be 'moved' out of the enclitic position (which most frequently happens with cliticized [e]s), e.g.:

         Text:                    jǫfur ... þanns ...                                                                                       

         Prose order:          þann jǫfur, [e]s ...

# g.   Words separated by tmesis in the Text should not be hyphenated in the Prose order, e.g.:

         Anon (TGT) 44^III: Stiklarstöðum [not Stiklar-stöðum]
