Nokkuru síðar fór sótt mikil yfir héruð. Þess er getið að einn hvern aftan kom í Hvamm sá maður er kominn var utan af Snjáfellsnesi en áður úr Borgarfirði. Hann var sumrungur einn. Sturla settist á tal við hann og spurði margs. Hann spurði fyrst um ferðir hans en hinn sagði. Þá mælti Sturla: Er sótt mikil suður um héraðið? Hann sagði að svo væri. Komstu í Hítardal? segir Sturla. Já, sagði hann ferðamaðurinn. Hversu mátti Þorleifur? segir Sturla. Því var betur að hann mátti vel, sagði ferðamaðurinn. Já, segir Sturla, svo má vera því að allar kvalar munu honum sparaðar til annars heims. Nú skildu þeir talið. Og fer hinn of myrgin og allt vestur í fjörðu og vestan nær vetri og kom í Hítardal. Þorleifur bóndi var spurull við hann og frétti margs: Komstu úr fjörðum vestan? Ferðamaðurinn segir svo vera. Þorleifur spurði: Hversu er þannig ært? Hann segir þar gott utan sótt gerðist þar nú mikil. Þorleifur spurði: Komstu í Hvamm? Já, segir hann. Hversu mátti Sturla bóndi? Vel mátti hann, segir ferðamaðurinn, er eg fór vestur en nú lá hann er eg fór vestan og var mjög tekinn. Svo mun vera, segir Þorleifur, hann mun nú hafa illt en hálfu verra síðar.
