Þá réð fyrir Grikklandi Zóe drottning hin ríka og með henni
Mikjáll katalaktus.

En er Haraldur kom til Miklagarðs á fund drottningar þá gekk
hann þar á mála og fór þegar um haustið á galeiður með
hermönnum þeim er fóru út í Grikklandshaf. Hélt Haraldur
sveit af sínum mönnum. Þá var höfðingi yfir herinum sá maður
er nefndur er Gyrgir. Hann var frændi drottningar.

En er Haraldur hafði litla hríð verið í herinum, áður en
Væringjar þýddust mjög til hans, og fóru þeir allir saman
þegar er bardagar voru. Kom þá svo að Haraldur gerðist
höfðingi yfir öllum Væringjum. Fóru þeir Gyrgir víða um
Grikklandseyjar, unnu þar herskap mikinn á kussurum.
