limsorg náar himni;
vítt vas ferð á flótta
fús; gaus eldr ór húsum.
{Limsorg} lék fíkjum náar himni of Ljóðhús; vítt vas ferð fús á flótta; eldr gaus ór húsum.
‘The branch-sorrow [FIRE] played fiercely near the sky throughout Lewis; far and wide the crowds were eager for flight; fire gushed from houses.’
notes and context
Stanzas 5-9 document Magnús’s harrying in the Hebrides, along the coast of Scotland and on the Isle of Man during his first campaign to the west in 1098 (see Introduction to the poem above).
The half-st. is recorded in Hkr and H-Hr only, where it is given as ll. 1-4 of our st. 7. According to the prose of Mork, F and Fsk (ÍF 29, 307), Magnús first descended on the island of Lewis in his series of attacks on the Hebrides.
