Urðut * góð

af Hôkoni.

Ævilok {fǫður Eireks} urðut * góð í Gaulardal, þás Karkr þræll meitti {hattarstall} af Hôkoni knífi.

The death {of Eiríkr’s father} [= Hákon] did not turn out well in Gauldalen, when Karkr the slave sliced {the hat-support} [HEAD] off Hákon with a knife.

Mss: Flat(144va)

Readings: [1] Urðut *: urðu ei Flat

Editions: Skj: [Anonyme digte og vers XII], [2]. Nóregs konunga-tal 21: AI, 582, BI, 578, Skald I, 280-1; Flat 1860-8, II, 522.

Notes: [All]: Hákon jarl was killed by his slave, Karkr, in 995 when they were hiding beneath a pigsty at the farm Romol near the river Gaula, across from Melhus, Trøndelag. See Theodoricus (MHN 18), HN (MHN 115), Ágr (ÍF 29, 17), Fsk (ÍF 29, 139), ÓTHkr (ÍF 26, 293-8). — [1] urðut * (3rd pers. pl. pret. indic.) ‘did not turn out’: Flat’s urðu ei ‘became not’ (late and unmetrical) has been emended to urðut with enclitic negation (see st. 6/2). — [3] ævilok ‘death’: Lit. ‘life-closures’. This is n. pl., which accounts for the pl. form of urðut ‘became not’ (l. 1). See also st. 53/3 below.
