Enn í haug
hauldar lǫgðu
sikling þann
á Sæheimi.
Hurfu svá
frá Haralds arfa
frœknir menn
fjǫrvi ræntum.

Enn hauldar lǫgðu þann sikling í haug á Sæheimi. Svá hurfu frœknir menn frá {arfa Haralds}, ræntum fjǫrvi.

And freeholders placed that prince in a mound at Seim. Thus valiant men turned away from {Haraldr’s heir} [= Hákon], robbed of his life.

Readings: [2] hauldar: ‘haudar’ Flat

Editions: Skj: [Anonyme digte og vers XII], [2]. Nóregs konunga-tal 17: AI, 581, BI, 577-8, Skald I, 280; Flat 1860-8, II, 521.

Notes: [2] hauldar ‘freeholders’: The emendation is in keeping with most earlier eds. Flat 1860-8, II emends to Hǫrðar ‘people of Hordaland’. For the Norw. form hauldr ‘freeholder’, see ANG §105 Anm. A hauldr was a man who by right of birth held property under the Norw. allodial system (óðal). See the lengthy discussion in Fritzner: höldr. — [4] á Sæheimi ‘at Seim’: Seim is located on the peninsula Lindås, north of Osterfjorden in Nordhordland, Norway.
