‘Því sótta eg þetta
þitt líkneski að hitta,
mest að, Máría, treystag,
mín, fulltingi þínum.
Aungvan á eg til geingis
annan fæddra manna,
— því er eg sett í sára
sorg — að mier fái borgið.

‘Því sótta eg að hitta þetta líkneski þitt, að, Máría mín, treystag mest fulltingi þínum. Eg á aungvan annan fæddra manna til geingis, að fái borgið mier; því er eg sett í sára sorg.

‘For this reason I came to find this effigy of yours, because, my Mary, I have trusted most of all in your help. I have nobody else among born men for support so that it may save me; therefore I am placed in dire distress.

Mss: 721(13r)

Readings: [3] Máría: Máríu 721    [8] borgið: ‘bogit’ 721

Editions: Skj: [Anonyme digte og vers XIV], [B. 4]. Et digt om Marias jærtegn 17: AII, 490, BII, 529-30, Skald II, 290; Kahle 1898, 34, 98, Sperber 1911, 5, 59, Wrightson 2001, 48.

Notes: [3] Máría (f. nom. sg.) ‘Mary’: This is a form of address, and the ms. reading, Máríu, is an oblique case. — [5, 6, 8] eg á aungvan annan fæddra manna til geingis að fái borgið mier ‘I have nobody else of born men for support so that it may save me’: Construed here as a svá að cl. with svá suppressed. Another possibility would be to understand (= er) as introducing a rel. cl. (‘nobody else of born men who can manage to save me’); however, is used very sparingly for er in Mv IIII. — [8] borgið ‘saved’: The missing <r> (721 ‘bogit’) is ensured by the internal rhyme (-org : -org-).
