Fór, sú er flóði í tárum;
fann musterið svanni;
sína griet með greinum
gjörð og kraup að jörðu.
Þar sá flóðið fríða
* feskasta líkneskju,

She who was flooded with tears went; the woman found the church; she wept for her deed with explanations and bent to the ground. There the fair lady saw the most beautiful effigy, which was fashioned for the pleasure of the Virgin Mary.

Mss: 721(13r), 1032ˣ(87v-88v)

Readings: [1] Fór: ‘F[...]’ 721, ‘F.’ 1032ˣ    [6] * feskasta: ið feskasta 721

Editions: Skj: [Anonyme digte og vers XIV], [B. 4]. Et digt om Marias jærtegn 15: AII, 489, BII, 529, Skald II, 290; Kahle 1898, 34, 98, Sperber 1911, 4, 59, Wrightson 2001, 47.

Notes: [1] fór ‘went’: The abbreviation for <or> is torn off in 721, but the <r> is ensured by the internal rhyme (-ór : -ár-). — [2] musterið ‘the church’: For this word, see Note to Vitn 15/3. — [6] * feskasta líkneskju (f. acc. sg.) ‘the most beautiful effigy’: The def. art. (n. acc. sg.) ‘the’ (ið feskasta líkneskju ‘the most beautiful effigy’; so 721) is ungrammatical because líkneskju ‘effigy’ is f. acc. sg. Furthermore, the def. art. makes the l. unmetrical (heptasyllabic with the main stave in position two). For the phrase fesk líkneskja ‘beautiful effigy’ see Vitn 17/6.
