Réð ek þær rúnar
er reist þín systir:
Björt hefir þér eigi
boðið ísinn þetta.
Eitt ek mest undrumk
mákat ek enn hyggja—
hvað þá varð vitri
er skyldi villt rísta;
því að svá var am sat
sem undir væri
bani ykkarr beggja
ef ið brálla kvæmið.   (eddic or germanic)

(‘I’m greatly surprised by one thing—I still can’t make it out—
why the clever woman should carve so awry;
for they seemed to indicate an underlying meaning:
the death of both of you if you hastened there now;
