Reiðr varð Gunnarr
ok hnipnaði,
sveip sínum hug,
sat um allan dag;
hann vissi það
vilgi görla
hvað hánum væri
vinna sæmst
eða hánum væri
vinna bezt,
allz sik Völsung
vissi firrðan
ok að Sigurð
söknuð mikinn.   (eddic or germanic)

(Gunnar was angry and cast down,
wrapped in thought, and he sat all day;
he did not know at all clearly
what would be most honourable for him to do,
or what would be best for him to do,
he knew he would have to get rid of the Volsung
and he knew Sigurd would be a great loss.
