Carry as visible proof Hjálmarr’s mail-coat into the king’s hall; that is my wish. The heart of the prince’s daughter will be deeply moved when she sees the shield before my breast slashed to pieces.

Mss: 344a(17v), 343a(68v), 471(75r), 173ˣ(37r) (Ǫrv)

Readings: [1] þú: þá 471    [3] Hjálmars: hjálm ok 343a, 471, 173ˣ    [4] höll: hollu 173ˣ    [6] dóttur: so all others, ‘d’ with ‘r’ added above the line in another hand 344a

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XIII], E. 10. Vers af Fornaldarsagaer: Af Ǫrvar-Oddssaga α 3: AII, 295, BII, 315, Skald II, 167, NN §2601; Ǫrv 1888, 103, Ǫrv 1892, 58, FSGJ 2, 259; Edd. Min. 50-1.

Context: This stanza follows Ǫrv 22 in all mss. There is no intervening prose.

Notes: [3] brynju Hjálmars ‘Hjálmarr’s mail-coat’: This is the reading of 344a alone and is adopted here (also by Skj B). Other eds prefer the remaining mss’ hjálm ok brynju ‘helmet and mail-coat’; this is consistent with the prose of Ǫrv (Ǫrv 1888, 107) which mentions both as being brought back to the Swedish court by Oddr and presented to the king. It could also be objected that Hjálmarr would be unlikely to speak of himself in the third person, but he is made to do so again in Ǫrv 24/5.
