Keyptir þú Snarvendil         með kossi einum;
var þat verð lítit,         vel frá ek mér kæmi.
Örr mundir þú af auði,         ef optar svá fengir,
jöfurr inn ógndjarfi         ok einkarhepni.

Þú keyptir Snarvendil með einum kossi; þat var lítit verð, ek frá mér kæmi vel. Þú mundir örr af auði, ef svá fengir optar, inn ógndjarfi ok einkarhepni jöfurr.

You bought Snarvendill with a single kiss; that was a low price, [but] I learnt it was fortunate for me. You would be liberal with riches, if you got such more often, dreadfully bold and very fortunate prince.

Mss: 109a IIIˣ(281r), papp6ˣ(59v), ÍBR5ˣ(104) (HjǪ)

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XIII], E. 16. Vers af Fornaldarsagaer: Af Hjálmþérs saga ok Ǫlvis VI 5: AII, 341, BII, 363, Skald II, 196; HjǪ 1720, 74, FSN 3, 513, FSGJ 4, 238-9, HjǪ 1970, 60, 110, 178.

Context: Another young woman, who turns out to be princess Álfsól, reminds Hjálmþér of how, when she was enchanted as Vargeisa the finngálkn, he obtained the sword Snarvendill from her for a kiss, which in turn saved her from the enchantment.

Notes: [4] ek frá mér kæmi vel ‘[but] I learnt it was fortunate for me’: Skj B and Skald add the conj. at ‘that’ before mér ‘for me’. — [5-8]: The admonition to the hero to be generous is similar to Hervǫr’s advice to Hjálmþér in HjǪ 27.
