Var þá féhirðir         fljótr til skógar
mjök frá máli         meyjar þessar;
en harðsnúinn         hugr í brjósti
um sakar slíkar         svellr Hervöru.

Féhirðir var þá mjök fljótr til skógar frá máli þessar meyjar; en harðsnúinn hugr svellr í brjósti Hervöru um slíkar sakar.

The shepherd then fled quickly towards the forest from the speech of this girl; but the steadfast heart swells in the breast of Hervǫr because of such things.

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XIII], E. 5. Vers af Fornaldarsagaer: Af Hervararsaga II 7: AII, 245, BII, 264-5, Skald II, 137-8; Heiðr 1672, 90, FSN 1, 519, Heiðr 1873, 213-14, Heiðr 1924, 21, 107, Heiðr 1960, 77; Edd. Min. 14 n.

Notes: [All]: The H redaction places this stanza after Herv Lv 6 (Heiðr 21), but it must come after the dialogue between Hervǫr and the shepherd, not part way through. — [All]: The U redaction (which has slight variants) has this stanza spoken by the shepherd, with the prose introduction, Féhirðir … tók til hlaupa sem mest mátti hann … ok kvað þetta ‘The shepherd … took to his heels as fast as he could … and recited this’. The stanza is clearly meant to be third-person narrative rather than speech, however. — [All]: Edd. Min. prints this stanza only in the notes. — [1, 2] var þá mjök fljótr ‘then fled quickly’: Lit. ‘was then very fast’. — [5] harðsnúinn ‘steadfast’: Lit. ‘hard-turned’.
