Hljóta ey með ítrum
alfegnastir þegnar
sólar vörð í sælu
slóðar alt it góða.
Krists vinnr krapt ins hæsta
krossmark viðum hnossa
alls bezt; lofar æztan
öll dýrð konung fyrða.

Þegnar alfegnastir hljóta ey alt it góða í sælu með {ítrum vörð {sólar slóðar}}. Krossmark ins hæsta Krists vinnr krapt alls bezt {viðum hnossa}; öll dýrð lofar {æztan konung fyrða}.

Thanes joyous beyond measure obtain forever every good thing in blessedness with {the glorious guardian {of the sun’s track}} [SKY/HEAVEN > = God]. The cross-sign of the most-high Christ gains power best of all {for trees of treasures} [MEN]; all glory exalts {the highest king of men} [RULER = Christ].

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XIII], C. 1. Líknarbraut 29: AII, 155, BII, 168, Skald II, 88, NN §1392, 2710A, cf. 3040; Sveinbjörn Egilsson 1844, 44, Rydberg 1907, 16, 50, Tate 1974, 74.

Notes: [3-4] sólar slóðar ‘of the sun’s track [SKY/HEAVEN]’: Slóð ‘track, path’ is a base-word in heaven-kennings also in Has 19/7-8 (skýja slóð ‘clouds’ track’) and Pl 4/7 (mána slóð ‘moon’s path’). ‘Narrow path’ and ‘light’ are also combined in the liturgical phrase semita lucis (Manz 1941, 457, no. 909).
