Ríkr barg lofðungr Leiknar
ljóthrǫmmuðustum Sóta;
svan frák blóðs til bráða
bjúgnefjaðastan fljúga.
Skutu bráðgegnir bragnar
beinskeptuðustum fleini;
almr sparn hart til hjalma
hvassodduðustum broddi.

Ríkr lofðungr barg {ljóthrǫmmuðustum Sóta Leiknar}; frák {bjúgnefjaðastan svan blóðs} fljúga til bráða. Bráðgegnir bragnar skutu beinskeptuðustum fleini; almr sparn hvassodduðustum broddi hart til hjalma.

The mighty lord provided for {the very ugly-pawed Sóti <horse> of Leikn <giantess>} [WOLF]; I heard that {the very crooked-beaked swan of blood} [RAVEN/EAGLE] flew to flesh. Very capable warriors shot the very straight-shafted spear; the elm-bow kicked the very sharp-pointed arrow hard towards helmets.

Mss: papp25ˣ(38r), R683ˣ(132r)

Readings: [1] barg: bar papp25ˣ, R683ˣ;    Leiknar: ‘licnar’ papp25ˣ, R683ˣ    [2] ‑hrǫmmuðustum: ‘‑rannadastom’ papp25ˣ, R683ˣ;    Sóta: ‘sotta’ papp25ˣ, R683ˣ    [6] ‑skeptuðustum: ‘‑sceptadastom’ papp25ˣ, ‘sceptadostom’ R683ˣ    [8] ‑odduðustum: ‘oddadastom’ papp25ˣ, R683ˣ

Editions: Skj: Rǫgnvaldr jarl og Hallr Þórarinsson, Háttalykill 32b: AI, 524, BI, 503, Skald I, 247, NN §2079; Hl 1941, 29, 85.

Context: As st. 63 above.

Notes: [1] barg; Leiknar ‘provided for; of Leikn <giantess>’: Bar ‘carried’ and ‘licnar’ must be Rugman’s misreadings of barg and Leiknar, although it is possible that ‘bar’ could reflect an actual (dialectal) loss of final ‑g (see Hl 1941, 113). For Leikn, see Vetrl Lv 1/1 and Note to Þul Trollkvenna 4/7. — [2] ljóthrǫmmuðustum ‘the very ugly-pawed’: Hap. leg.; a sup. adj. derived from hrammr ‘paw’. The mss have ‘liotrannadastom’, which most earlier eds emend to ljótrǫnuðustum ‘the very ugly-snouted’, from the adj. ljótr ‘ugly’ and rani m. ‘snout’; SnE 1848, 245 retains the ms. reading but does not explain what this word means. The metre requires a long syllable in position 2 (cf. papp25ˣ, R683‘: ‘-rann-’), however, and <mm> (or <m̄>) could have been misread as <nn> (initial h- in the cluster hr- is consistently omitted in Rugman’s transcriptions). For Norwegian lack of u-umlaut in the ms. transcriptions of this word (‘-rannadastom’), as well as in ‘-sceptadadstom’ and ‘-oddadastom’ (ll. 6, 8), see Note to st. 63/8. — [2] Sóta ‘Sóti <horse>’: The mss read ‘sotta’ (sótta ‘attacked’), reflecting the spelling <tt> for <t> (see Note to st. 38/5). Sóti is the name of a horse (see Anon Þorgþ I 1/6). — [4] bjúgnefjaðastan ‘the very crooked-beaked’: Hap. leg.; a sup. adj. derived from the noun nef ‘nose, beak’. — [6] beinskeptuðustum ‘the very straight-shafted’: Hap. leg.; p. p. of the verb skepta ‘supply with a shaft’. — [8] hvassodduðustum ‘the very sharp-pointed’: Hap. leg.; a sup. adj. derived from the noun oddr ‘point’.
