Was with battle … knew; the eagle came to {the spring of the she-wolf} [BLOOD] … Bit from {the prop of the hawk} [HAND] the helmet’s … ; he terrorised {the shallows of serpents} [GOLD]; came the wolf’s …

Mss: papp25ˣ(42v), R683ˣ(127v)

Readings: [3] brunni: ‘…’ papp25ˣ, R683ˣ    [7] œgði: ‘æfde han’ papp25ˣ, R683ˣ

Editions: Skj: Rǫgnvaldr jarl og Hallr Þórarinsson, Háttalykill 11b: AI, 516, BI, 492, Skald I, 241; Hl 1941, 35, 57-8.

Context: As st. 21 above.

Notes: [1-2, 4]: The readings of these lines cannot be restored. Skj B and Skald do not attempt to reconstruct the missing parts, and Finnur Jónsson and Kock reproduce the normalised ms. readings as in the present edn. Jón Helgason’s (Hl 1941) attempted reconstruction of this stanza is completely conjectural and is not reproduced here. — [3] brunni (m. dat. sg.) ‘the spring’: This is Finnur Jónsson’s suggestion (Skj B) and it has been adopted by subsequent eds. For brunni ylgjar ‘spring of the she-wolf’, see also st. 31/8. — [6] hjalms (m. gen. sg.) ‘the helmet’s’: This word is apparently the determinant in a sword-kenning (‘the sword bit from the hand of’). — [7] œgði (3rd pers. sg. pret. indic.) ‘terrorised’: This emendation (from ‘æfde’) follows earlier eds. The pron. hann ‘he’ (so both mss) makes the line hypermetrical and has been deleted in keeping with the standard normalisations of the present edn (see also Note to st. 21/3).
