The anonymous stanzas and fragments edited here (Anon (SnE) 1-18) are all preserved in Skm (SnE; for the mss in which they appear, see Introductions to the respective stanzas). In Skj Finnur Jónsson assigns sts 1-3, 5-14, 16 to the tenth century, sts 15 and 17 to the eleventh century and sts 4 and 18 to the twelfth century. In most cases, no firm date of composition can be established on the basis of metrical or linguistic criteria, and in the case of sts 11 and 13 Finnur Jónsson’s early date is contradicted by metrical peculiarities and diction. Stanzas 15 and 17 appear to be fragments of panegyrics composed in honour of two rulers, Magnús (st. 15) and sonr Sveins ‘Sveinn’s son’ (st. 17). The first of these must be one of the Norwegian kings Magnús inn góði ‘the Good’ Óláfsson (d. 1047) or Magnús berfœttr ‘Barelegs’ Óláfsson (d. 1103), and the recipient of the second is probably Knútr inn ríki ‘the Great’ Sveinsson (d. 1035), king of Denmark and England. Finnur Jónsson (Skj) arranges most of his tenth-century stanzas thematically under the headings Om skjaldskab ‘About skaldic art’ (sts 1, 11), Om kærlighedssorg ‘About lovesickness’ (st. 2), Om kampe og mod ‘About battles and bravery’ (sts 3, 5-7, 10) and Om sørejser ‘About journeys at sea’ (sts 12-14). In the present edition all stanzas are given in the order in which they appear in Skm. Stanzas 1-8, 10-16 and 18 are edited by Kari Ellen Gade, st. 9 by Margaret Clunies Ross and st. 17 by Matthew Townend. |
