Sincópa tekr í brott staf eða samstǫfu ór miðju orði sem Bragi hinn gamli kvað:
Þars sem lofðar líta
lung Váfaðar Gungnis.
Hér er gǫr ein samstafa tveim ok tekinn ór e raddarstafr ok sett svá, þars fyrir þar es; þetta kǫllum vér bragar-mál í skáldskap.
Syncope is the removal of a letter or syllable from the middle of a word, as Bragi the Old said: [...] Here one syllable is made of two and the vowel "e" has been removed, þars being put for þar es. We call that bragarmál ("poetical diction") in poetry.
