Próthesis er viðrlagning stafs eða samstǫfu í upphafi orðs sem Egill kvað:

51. Vrongu varrar gungnis
varrar lungs um stunginn.
Hér er við lagt v í þessu nafni, vrǫngu, til þess at réttir sé stuðlar í dróttkvæðum hætti. Um viðrlagning samstǫfu verðr próthesis sem hér:
Út réð Ingólfr leita
ógnreifr með Hjǫrleifi.
Hér er samstafa lǫgð við þetta nafn, leifr, ok lengt nafnit fyrir atburðar sakir hreysti hans.

Prothesis is the addition of a letter or syllable at the beginning of a word, as Egill said: [...] Here the "v" is added in the form vrǫngu in order provide the correct alliterating staves of the drottkvaett metre. Prothesis also occurs in the addition of a syllable, as here: [...] Here a syllable is added to the name Leifr, the name being lengthened because of his valour.
