Þarflátr ok þakklátr
skaltu fyrir þínum guði
ok vammalauss vera;
föður ok móður
unn þú fróðhugaðr;
ræktu þína alla ætt.

You must be humble and thankful and unblemished before your God; love your father and mother as a man with intelligence; take care of all your family.

notes: Lat. parallels: (sententia 1) Deo supplica ‘pray to God’; (sent. 2) parentes ama ‘love your parents’; (sent. 3) cognatos cole ‘respect your kindred’. The sts 3-16 translate the short gnomic sentences (breves sententiae), following the Epistula in the Lat. text. — [1-3]: These ll. correspond in both content and phrasing to Anon Sól 30. Cf. also the phrasing in Hsv 21 (vamma varr ‘free of blemish’) and the content of Hsv 73.
