{The mighty, bold lord {of the land of the sun}} [SKY/HEAVEN > = God] assists men with such love-gifts, which are a victory and an honour to gain. The army on earth [i.e. Christians] sings for a long time wished for-praise to the wise spirit …

Readings: [6-8] abbrev. as ‘lannd herr spo᷎kum a. l.’ B

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XIII], C. [3]. Heilags anda vísur 10: AII, 161-2, BII, 177, Skald II, 93; Sveinbjörn Egilsson 1844, 54, Rydberg 1907, 2, 46, Attwood 1996a, 57-8, 153.

Notes: [3] þeim er: Here interpreted as a rel. pron. referring back to ástgjöfum ‘love-gifts’ (l. 2). Skj B understands a separate cl. er sigr ok sómi þeim ‘it is a victory and an honour to that one (i.e. God)’. — [4] fróns sólar ‘of the land of the sun’: Although the sky- or heaven-kenning frón sólar occurs elsewhere only in an anonymous helmingr on the Crucifixion quoted in Anon (FoGT) 6/2III to illustrate the figure of chronographia (SnE 1848-87, II, 196; TGT 1884-6, 123), heaven-kennings on the same model occur very frequently in Christian verse. Cf. land sólar ‘land of the sun’ (Leið 26/1-2); dags reitr ‘day’s patch of land’ (Líkn 32/6); sólar reitr ‘sun’s patch of land’ (Anon Lil 11/4). — [5-8]: Repetition of a second stef, the two last ll. of which are not preserved, is indicated by the obelos symbol in the right-hand margin beside fol. 10r, l. 20. — [6] anda ‘spirit’: B abbreviates this and the following words a. l. This edn follows Finnur Jónsson, Kock and Rydberg in adopting Sveinbjörn Egilsson’s reconstruction to anda, acc. sing. of m. andi ‘spirit’, the recipient of the Christians’ hymnsinging.
