Heyrðu til upphafsorða,
alls vinnandi, minna,

Listen to my opening words, {maker of everything} [= God], threefold and one in your Trinity, who is acknowledged as God. {Lord of mercy} [= God (= Christ)], my good redeemer, let a glorious poem be produced about your exalted mother.

Mss: 713(83), 721(10v)

Readings: [5] líknar: liknað 713, 721

Editions: Skj: [Anonyme digte og vers XIV], [B. 3]. Vitnisvísur af Maríu 1: AII, 483, BII, 520, Skald II, 285, NN §2668; Jón Þorkelsson 1888, 42, Kahle 1898, 49-50, Sperber 1911, 23, 69, Wrightson 2001, 27.

Notes: [2] vinnandi alls ‘maker of everything [= God]’: For alls ‘of everything’ in religious poetry, see LP: allr 2. — [3] þrennr ‘threefold’: The l. has three rhyming syllables in stressed positions, perhaps signalling its threefold subject, and Sperber (1911) emends to þreðr ‘three’ (see ANG §459). For the concept ‘threefold and one in your Trinity’ (trinitas in unitate) see Schottmann (1973, 118-19). — [5] líknar ‘of mercy’: Líknað (so 713, 721) is a scribal error.
