Sól ek sá        sjaldan hryggvari;
        mjök var ek þá ór heimi hallr;
tunga mín
        var til trés metin
        ok kólnat at fyrir utan.

Ek sá sól, sjaldan hryggvari; ek var þá mjök hallr ór heimi; tunga mín var metin til trés ok kólnat at fyrir utan.

I saw the sun, [I was] seldom more grief-stricken; I was then forcefully tilting out of this world; my tongue was as if turned to wood and it was chilled on the outside.

Mss: 166bˣ(47r), papp15ˣ(4v-5r), 738ˣ(82r), 214ˣ(150v-151r), 1441ˣ(584), 10575ˣ(6v), 2797ˣ(234)

Readings: [3] mjök: ok 738ˣ;    ór: mjök ór 738ˣ, ‘[...]’ 214ˣ    [5] til: om. 1441ˣ    [6] kólnat: so 738ˣ, ‘kolnud’ 166bˣ, klofnat papp15ˣ;    at: om. papp15ˣ, 738ˣ, 10575ˣ

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XII], G [6]. Sólarljóð 44: AI, 634, BI, 642, Skald I, 312, NN §2152; Bugge 1867, 364, Falk 1914, 19, Björn M. Ólsen 1915, 15, Fidjestøl 1979, 66, Njörður Njarðvík 1991, 75, Njörður Njarðvík 1993, 50, 122.

Notes: [3]: The same l. occurs at 40/3. — [4-5] tunga mín var metin til trés ‘my tongue was as if turned to wood’: Metin from meta ‘to estimate, value, assess as, regard, perceive as’. — [6] kólnat ‘it was chilled’: The verb must be impers. here, as the n. p.p. cannot modify tunga f. (l. 4). Skald follows 166bˣ and emends to allow this: ok kólnuð allt fyr utan.
