Synðir því valda,        at vér hryggvir förum
        ægisheimi ór;
engi óttaz,
        nema ilt geri;
        gótt er vammalausum vera.

Synðir valda því, at vér förum hryggvir ór ægisheimi; engi óttaz, nema ilt geri; gótt er vera vammalausum.

Sins cause this, that sorrowful we journey out of the terrible world; no-one is afraid, unless he does wrong; it is good to be without stains.

Mss: 166bˣ(46v), papp15ˣ(3v), 738ˣ(81r), 214ˣ(150r), 1441ˣ(583), 10575ˣ(5r), 2797ˣ(233)

Readings: [2] hryggvir: syrgir 2797ˣ    [6] vammalausum: vammalaus 214ˣ, vammlausum 10575ˣ;    vera: at vera 214ˣ

Editions: Skj: Anonyme digte og vers [XII], G [6]. Sólarljóð 30: AI, 632, BI, 640, Skald I, 311; Bugge 1867, 362, Falk 1914, 14, Björn M. Ólsen 1915, 12, Fidjestøl 1979, 64, Njörður Njarðvík 1991, 64, Njörður Njarðvík 1993, 36, 111.

Notes: [2] hryggvir ‘sorrowful’: 2797ˣ’s reading syrgir (?for saurgir ‘stained’) is an attempt to improve the alliteration; otherwise ll. 1 and 2 are unmetrical. — [3] ægisheimi (dat. sg.) ‘terrible world’: A hap. leg., perhaps calqued on œgishjálmr lit. ‘helmet of terror’, the helmet owned by Fáfnir in Fáfn 16, 17, and related to œgir (LP: skrækindjager ‘one who induces terror’). — [6] vammalausum vera ‘to be without stains’, lit. ‘[it is good] for the stainless ones to exist’: Cf. Sigrdr 22/3: vammalauss verir ‘be without stains’; Hsv 3/3: vammalauss lífa ‘to live without stains’, and more distantly, Hávm 68; Rom. XIII.4.
