Ánastásía aura sína
alla gaf sem þorp og hallir;
klæði færði hun kristnum lýðum;
kvinnan blíð var tekin um síðir.
Hreina mey liet Próbus pína;
prúður lifði geisli brúða
hundrað daga, svá að hvörki kendi
hold mæðanda víns nie fæðu.
Ánastásía gaf alla aura sína sem þorp og hallir; hun færði klæði kristnum lýðum; um síðir var blíð kvinnan tekin. Próbus liet pína hreina mey; prúður geisli brúða lifði hundrað daga, svá að mæðanda hold kendi hvörki víns nie fæðu.
‘Anastasia gave away all her money as well as villages and halls; she brought clothes to Christian people; eventually the gentle woman was captured. Probus had the pure maiden tormented; the beautiful light-beam of brides lived for one hundred days, in such a way that her weary flesh tasted neither wine nor food.’
notes and context
There seems not to have been a cult of the martyr Anastasia in medieval Iceland; no ON vernacular saint’s life exists, nor is she found in extant Icel. calendars. This C4th saint, whose feast day is 25 December (and is thus commemorated at the second mass of Christmas day; see st. 43/5-8), was martyred at Sirmium in Pannonia (Bosnia).
