Skalka hverfa frá ungum erfingjum grams, þótt fylkir falli sjalfr til vallar; gengr, sem goð vill. Sól skínnat á sýnni konungsefni an þá báða; {hefnendr snarráðs Haralds} eru gǫrvir haukar.

‘I shall not desert the young heirs of the king, although the commander himself should fall to the ground; it will go as God wills. The sun will not shine on clearer material for kingship than those two; the avengers of swift-counselled Haraldr [= Magnús and Óláfr] are complete hawks.’

notes and context

In the Hkr, Fsk and H-Hr accounts of the battle of Stamford Bridge, Þjóðólfr speaks a st. immediately after Hharð Lv 14. In Mork and Flat, the st. is not connected with Haraldr’s, but follows Arn Hardr 10 and Hardr 12; Þjóðólfr utters it as the Norwegians await the Engl. army.
