Ódyggra manna skaltu aldrigi
fagna bráðum bana;
hitt er sýnna, at sælir munu
dyggvir menn, þótt deyi.
Skaltu aldrigi fagna bráðum bana ódyggra manna; hitt er sýnna, at dyggvir menn munu sælir, þótt deyi.
‘You must never rejoice at the sudden death of wicked men; it is obvious that worthy men will [be] blessed when they die.’
Lat. parallel: (Dist. IV, 46) Morte repentina noli gaudere malorum: / felices obeunt quorum sine crimine vita ‘Do not rejoice at the sudden death of evil-doers; happy die those whose life [is] without blemish’. The topic of gloating is also dealt with in Hsv 35.
