Hrafns heiti — Þul HrafnsIII

Anonymous Þulur

Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Hrafns heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 944. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3238> (accessed 22 May 2024)

This þula (Þul Hrafns) contains names for ‘raven’, and it is recorded in mss A and B (and 744ˣ) of Skm (SnE). In both mss, the þula has the heading Hrafns heiti ‘Names for raven’ (in A, as usual, written in red ink). In the þulur-sequence, the list of Hrafns heiti is preceded by Þul Hauks and followed by Þul Hana. Six of the heiti (krákr ‘crow’, Huginn, Muninn, borginmóði, árflognir ‘early-flier’ and ártali ‘year-counter’) are also listed in the section of Skm (SnE 1998, I, 91) that enumerates terms for ‘raven’. That list is given in LaufE (LaufE 1979, 273, 351; mss papp10ˣ(42r), 2368ˣ(94), 743ˣ(74v)) as well, along with an additional ten heiti from the present þula. The variants show that these heiti must have been copied from a ms. higher up the stemma than A and B, and readings from LaufE have therefore been considered in the Notes of the present edition when pertinent. The list from LaufE was copied in RE 1665(Ff 3), but that version has no independent value.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
