Vargs heiti — Þul VargsIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Vargs heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 902. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3216> (accessed 21 May 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Vargs) contains
heiti for ‘wolf’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). In mss A, B, the
þula has the chapter heading
Vargs heiti ‘Names for wolf’ (in A written in red ink). The heading is illegible in R and omitted in
Tˣ, C. In all the mss,
Þul Vargs is preceded by
Þul Galtar and followed by Þul
Himins. The
þula is bipartite, with the first stanza enumerating terms for ‘he-wolf’ and the second devoted to
heiti for ‘she-wolf’. It is metrically irregular, with hyper- and hypo-metrical lines, and some lines (sts 1/10, 2/4) lack alliteration. There are also differences between the R,
Tˣ, C and A, B redactions with regard to the
heiti included in the
þula and the sequence in which these are given (see Notes below). Most of the
heiti are also included in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 309, 401; mss
papp10ˣ(53r), 23
38ˣ(136),
743ˣ(101r)) from a ms. closest to the R,
Tˣ, C redaction, although
LaufE lists the
heiti kinni (A variant of
Freki, st. 1/5; see Note there), apparently from a ms. close to A. The list was copied from
LaufE in RE 1665(Ll 3); neither redaction has been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
