Ǫrvar heiti — Þul ǪrvarIII
Anonymous Þulur
Elena Gurevich 2017, ‘ Anonymous, Ǫrvar heiti’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 818. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=3198> (accessed 21 May 2024)
This
þula (
Þul Ǫrvar) contains
heiti for ‘arrow’. It is recorded in mss R (main ms.),
Tˣ, C, A and B (and
744ˣ) of
Skm (
SnE). In mss A and B, the
þula has the heading
Ǫrvar heiti ‘Names for arrow’ (in A, as usual, written in red ink but very faint and almost illegible). In the
þulur-sequence,
Þul Ǫrvar is preceded by
Þul Spjóts and followed by
Þul Boga in all mss. Most of the
heiti in this
þula are also recorded in
LaufE (
LaufE 1979, 299, 385; mss
papp10ˣ(50r),
2368ˣ(123),
744ˣ(93r)), but because some forms correspond to the list in the R,
Tˣ, C redaction and some to the A, B redaction, it is difficult to establish a source for the
LaufE version. The
heiti were copied in RE 1665(Kk-Kk2) from a
LaufE ms., and neither
LaufE nor RE 1665 has been considered in the present edition.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
