Fragments — ESk FragIII
Einarr Skúlason
Kari Ellen Gade 2017, ‘ Einarr Skúlason, Fragments’ in Kari Ellen Gade and Edith Marold (eds), Poetry from Treatises on Poetics. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 3. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 151. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1155> (accessed 21 May 2024)
All of the eighteen fragments edited below (
ESk Frag 1-18) are recorded in
Skm (
SnE), and Frag 4-7, 9 and 11 are also preserved in
LaufE. The order of these stanzas and their classification as ‘fragments’ (
Ubestemmelige vers ‘Stanzas of indeterminate origin’) follow
Skj (see Introduction to
ESk Lv). In some cases it is clear that the stanzas must have been part of longer poetic compositions in honour of rulers and magnates (e.g. Frag 1-7, 11, 15-16), but the status of other stanzas (e.g. Frag 9-10, 17-18) is less certain. Jón Sigurðsson (
SnE 1848-87, III) was inclined to assign many of these fragments to extant or putative poems composed by Einarr, but those attributions are highly speculative. According to S
káldatal (
SnE 1848-87,
III, 254-5, 263-4, 269, 276-7, 286), Einarr composed poetry for the following Norwegian rulers: Eysteinn Magnússon (d. 1123), Sigurðr jórsalafari ‘Jerusalem-farer’ Magnússon (d. 1130), Haraldr gilli(-kristr) ‘Servant (of Christ)’ Magnússon (d. 1136), Magnús inn blindi ‘the Blind’ Sigurðarson (d. 1139), Sigurðr munnr ‘Mouth’ Haraldsson (d. 1155), Eysteinn Haraldsson (d. 1157) and Ingi Haraldsson (d. 1161). For a more detailed discussion of the individual stanzas, see Introductions to the respective fragments below.

CloseInformation about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work
This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.
For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.
Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.
The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
