The fourteen sts edited here (with the siglum ÞjóðA Magn) are all preserved in Hkr (Kˣ as main ms., 39, F, J2ˣ, E) and in H-Hr (H, Hr). For previous edns of the sts, see the individual listings and the Biography of Þjóðólfr above. The sts are all but indistinguishable in Hkr and H-Hr from sts presumed to belong to Þjóðólfr’s Magnússflokkr (Magnfl), and the status of both sets is discussed in the Introduction to Magnfl above. In brief: like the Magnfl sts, the Magn set are cited with Svá segir Þjóðólfr ‘As Þjóðólfr says’ and equivalent formulas (see st. 14 for the main exception), and feature the same antagonists: Magnús (Magn 10, 13), Sveinn (Magn 3, 7, 12, 13), as well as Norðmenn (Magn 6, 10) and Sknungar (Magn 11). They concern the aftermaths of the great sea-battles depicted in Magnfl, off Århus in 1043 (Áróss, Magn 1-7) and Helgenæs (Helganes) (c. 1044, Magn 8-14) and the action is located á Fjóni ‘on Fyn’ (Magn 6, 7, 13), til Lundar, yfir Skáney ‘to Lund, across Skåne’ (Magn 10), í Danaveldi, of heiði ‘in the Danish realm, over the heath’ (Magn 12), and off víð Skáneyrar síðu ‘the broad coast of Skanör’ (Magn 14). These facts would be compatible with a view of the sts either as part of, or separate from, Magnfl, but the sense of separateness is encouraged especially by discourse features such as verb tenses, 1st-pers. verbs and deictic adverbs, all of which collectiverly underline the personal involvement of the skald, so much so that Guðbrandur Vigfússon entitled the set ‘His own exploits when following Magnús’ (CPB II, 202).
